Pompeii: Romancing the Bones with Dr Estelle Lazer

    Saturday, 18 August @ 2:30 pm

In 1834, Edward Bulwer Lytton’s historical novel, the Last Days of Pompeii, was published. It was an immediate success and has been in print ever since. One of the devices he used for the basis of his characters was to re-flesh skeletons that he had seen or had been reported, using circumstantial evidence from associated artefacts and context to invest these victims with lives, personalities and names they almost certainly never had. This approach has had an enduring influence on the interpretation of victims of the AD 79 eruption to the present. This lecture will investigate why the Bulwer Lytton approach has been so compelling.
Dr Estelle Lazer is an archaeologist with an international reputation for her work on the human victims of Pompeii.
